A woman on a first date plunged to her death from the 17th-floor of a New York apartment block after the railing on her balcony gave way.

Jennifer Rosoff, 35, had been out for dinner with Stephen Close, 35, on Wednesday evening before inviting him back to her Manhattan Upper East Side apartment.

She went outside for a cigarette at around 12.50am local time and either leaned or sat on the railing while talking to her date.

Moments after Mr Close had warned her to get down, the railing on the grey brick high-rise building gave way.

She fell and landed on construction scaffolding on the first floor, authorities said.

Neighbour Steve Hersch told DNAinfo: 'I heard a bang. I thought it was a gunshot.'

Another added: 'It sounded like a 200-pound punch.'

Police spoke to the man and cleared him of any possible wrongdoing.

Buildings officials took part of the broken railing to examine how it could have given way and plan to determine whether the other balconies are structurally sound.

Her employers at advertising firm TripleLift said she will be 'deeply missed'.

'Her tremendous energy and humour brought so much joy to the office,' said chief executive Eric Berry.

'The entire company is distraught by the loss.'
