Kate Middleton is a step closer to becoming a mum after going into labour.

The Duchess of Cambridge was taken to the Lindo wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London, this morning.

She travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing of the hospital with Prince William.

A brief statement from Kensington Palace was released at 7.30am after rumours she had been spotted began circulating.

The statement read: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted this morning to St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, in the early stages of labour.

"The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge."

The Duchess was taken to the Lindo wing just before 6am.

Kate and William, who spent the weekend at Kensington Palace, traveled without a police escort, their spokesman said.

He added: "Things are progressing as normal."

Prince William has continued working as an RAF search and rescue pilot in Anglesey while Kate has remained in the south east ahead of the birth of their first child. It is thought a helicopter has been on stand-by to fly him to London so he can be with Kate when she is in labour.

The 31-year-old, who married Prince William in April 2011 , is hoping to have a natural birth, St James' Palace aides revealed last month.

The baby is set to be delivered by obstetrician Marcus Setchell, who has been gynaecologist to the Queen since 1990 and delivered Sophie Wessex's two children.

William and Kate do not know whether they are having a boy or a girl according to Palace officials.

After Kate has given birth, and once the Queen, Royal Family and Middletons have been told, an official will be seen leaving the hospital with a piece of paper bearing the announcement of the new arrival.

This will be put into a car and driven with a police escort to Buckingham Palace where it will be positioned on the easel in the forecourt for well-wishers to see.

The easel is the same one used for William's birth and has not been used since.

Shortly after this, again in keeping with precedent, the baby's gender, exact time of birth and weight will be revealed.

It was thought Kate's due date was 13 July, although royal officials only confirmed the couple were expecting their first child in June.

The Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy has been followed keenly around the world ever since her happy news was announced early after she suffered from acute morning sickness .

After recovering from the condition, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, she continued with her public engagements.

She has stepped away from the limelight in the final weeks of her pregnancy but has been in the news as much as ever as anticipation about the new member of the royal family builds.

The new royal arrival has sparked plenty of special betting offers from bookmakers, who are offering odds on everything from the colour of the baby's hair to what the name of their first boyfriend or girlfriend will be.

Much of the debate centres on what the baby may be called , but royal watchers may have to wait a while to find out what the tot will be called. Charles and Diana waited a week before announcing their son would be called William, Prince Andrew and Fergie took two weeks over Princess Beatrice and the Queen took a whole MONTH before giving Prince Charles his name.

But the baby will definitely be an HRH and a first Prince or Princess of Cambridge .

The Queen ruled in January a daughter would be a Princess - under previous convention a daughter would have been titled Lady, although a son would have been a Prince.
