A boozing mum from Macassar near Somerset West, Western Cape, SA allegedly locked her two daughters, one aged two and one 17, who is mentally disabled, in the house while she went drinking.
The kids were allegedly playing with matches and set the house alight.
The City of Cape Town's disaster management spokesman, Wilfred Solomon-Johannes said, "The firefighters came just on time.
"Parts of the building were destroyed but the remainder of the house suffered slight smoke and water damage.
"The kids who were left alone in the house were interviewed about the cause of the fire and admitted playing with matches.
"Fortunately the children were rescued unharmed."
Neighbours said that it is not the first time that the mum has done such a thing and neighbours claim that they have warned her before.
Melany Kuhn, spokeswoman for the department of Social Development, said they are still gathering information regarding the incident.
Kuhn said the mum may face charges of neglecting her children.
Solomon-Johannes has urged residents to be careful and to keep matches, lighters, paraffin and poisonous substances out of the reach of young children.
