Marry Nkwamba (50) from Bolokanang, SA, had to pay R1500 for her son to be circumcised, but when she heard what was going on at the illegal initiation school, she didn't hesitate to go and get him.
She told Daily Sun: "A month ago my son disappeared from home and I found out he was at an initiation school.
"Then the owner of the school came and demanded R1500. Although I hate initiation schools, I wanted to save my son's life so I paid the money. But then former initiates told me that my son's life was in danger."
That's when she went to the police, who went with her to fetch her son.
"It broke my heart to find him lying there in pain. He couldn't even walk," she said.
Thomas Leshope (14), Marry's son, regrets going to the initiation school.
"That monster made me walk through fire barefoot while other initiates sang. I suffered a lot there," he said.
Thomas is now in Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein where he is being treated for his badly burnt feet.
"I don't know why that cruel man didn't take my son to hospital," said Marry. "I wonder what could have happened if I did not fetch him."
Nkwamba Initiation Association member Frank Ngoma said they have records of all the initiation schools around Petrusburg but they don't know about this school.
"The school is illegal as it's not registered. We will open a case against the owner," Ngoma said.
Lieutenant-Colonel Annelie Wrensch said: "Cops are investigating a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
"At this stage no arrest has been made."
