An obese sausage dog is recovering after undergoing surgery to remove more than 1kg of loose skin.

Formerly obese dachshund Obie had the emergency procedure after losing a whopping 40lb in seven months when his owner put him on a crash diet.

The problematic loose skin was dragging behind the canine as a constant reminder of the 77lb hound he used to be.

At the age of five, Obie had ballooned to almost double the size of a normal dachshund before his new diet.

Obie and his owner Nora Vanatta have become minor celebrities in the US after appearing on numerous TV shows, while a Facebook page dedicated to the dog has almost 90,000 followers.

The dog-lover adopted him after he was nearly fed to death by his elderly loving owners who 'couldn't say no to his big brown eyes'.

'He arrived on August 18th and to my astonishment he was a dachshund and he actually weighed 77 lbs,' she said.

'He is extremely sweet and loving. He was obviously loved and is a joy to work with. The aging owners just couldn't say no.'

However, Oregon Dachshund Rescue owner Jenell Rangan has accused Ms Vanatta of exploiting the dog and has launched a custody battle.
