Thieves in South Africa have left about 250 000 people without water.
They have been stealing expensive borehole pumps for eight years in the Greater Giyani Municipality in Limpopo.
Although the municipality sends water trucks to some villages twice a week, many people don’t have enough water to wash and cook.
Five machines have been stolen in Muyexe in the past five months.
The municipality has spent R5 million to replace the pumps, only for the new ones to also be stolen.
Giyani Police Warrant Officer Thomas Makhuvele confirmed that the pumps were stolen.
Mopani District Municipality spokesman Neil Shikwambana said the theft of borehole pumps is one of the biggest challenges they face.
