South African police have been closing illegal initiation schools.
They acted after concerned parents reported dozens of boys missing.
Many boys were allegedly abducted by men known to them while a few went willingly to illegal initiation schools, without their parents’ permission.
David “Mashamplan” Lebele, 17, from Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, had been missing for two weeks.
Police found him asleep and alone in a tent without food, blankets or shoes in the bush near Ennerdale.
David said the school owners left him there and promised to come back but they didn’t.
Cops destroyed the illegal initiation school and took David home.
Constable Tshifhiwa Mitileni said young men who kidnap boys for illegal initiation schools face arrest.
In another incident 17-year-old boy had to have his feet amputated after being beaten and burnt, and another initiate was assaulted and pelted to death with burning coals when they fled from the schools.
Young women at some initiation schools were forced to eat burning coals and were brutally assaulted.
