Gautrain is Africa's first world-class, modern rapid rail and bus service for Gauteng, a province regarded as the economic heartland of South Africa.
Angry commuters have threatened to burn Gautrain train coaches if Metrorail services are not improved with immediate effect.
One of the leaders, Albert Mokoena, told transport department deputy-general Maria du Toit that commuters would resort to drastic actions if the train service in Pretoria did not improve said The Citizen.
In a statement Mokoena said, “Before March 28 you must have responded to our demands. We have resolved among ourselves that it is not good to burn our own trains (Metrorail trains). We are going to burn the Gautrain, it would be useless for us to burn our own property, but that Gautrain is not for us, it’s for the rich people. It is for the bourgeois,” he said outside the Bosman railway station in Pretoria.
He said the department of transport did not bother about majority South Africa needs when it invested in the Gautrain project. He said “the money that was used to build Gautrain was supposed to be used for the transport system of the majority. When you plan, you need to look at where the needs are. You should pass that to the Transport Minister Ben Martins”, said irate Mokoena.
"The investment in the Gautrain was useless. We will burn those sophisticated trains which speak English inside them. This is not a threat. I am a politician and I use political language,” he said.
