A motorist in Shandong province, China found himself in the world's biggest pothole when the road suddenly collapsed beneath him sending his car down a 10ft chasm.
Surveyors believe a broken water mains washed out the ground underneath the road causing it to collapse under motorist Che Ling.
"There was a sharp, loud crack and the road just fell away and swallowed up the car," said one witness.
A local Town Hall engineering official said: "The fault would have been impossible to detect until the road collapsed.
"Now we have to close the square to test for other sink holes."
